Bircham Dyson Bell bolsters public law offering with Partner hire

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Smith as a Partner specialising in public law. Matthew, who was previously at BDB in the early 2000s, re-joins the firm from Capsticks, where he was a member of the Public Law team and head of Information Law. The appointment is with immediate effect.

With over 20 years’ experience in both contentious and non-contentious public law, Matthew advises a diverse range of clients. As a litigator, Matthew specialises in judicial review and statutory appeals.  He has acted in matters at all levels of the domestic judicial system, and before the European Court of Human Rights.  He has been instructed in a number of the most significant public law inquiries and investigations in recent years – including the Bloody Sunday and the Hutton Inquiries and the Savile investigation. Matthew has also worked at the Home Office, where he honed his parliamentary drafting and legislative skills, as well as for the Treasury Solicitor’s Department and Her Majesty’s Treasury.

Matthew brings a wealth of experience in public law across a wide range of sectors, including in health, education and local government. At BDB, Matthew will work between two departments; Litigation and Dispute Resolution and Government and Infrastructure.
